[알쏭달쏭 영어표현] 시식을 하다

흔히 가족들과 주말이면 마트에 간다. 마트에서 빠지지 않고 가는 곳이 있으니 '시식코너' 

푸드 매장을 한바퀴 돌며 시식을 하고 나면 배고픔도 살짝 가신다. 

그럼 "시식을 하다"는 영어로 뭐라고 말할까? 궁금해진다. 

시식은 시험삼아 먹는 거니까 일단 try, food 뭐 이런 단어부터 떠오른다. 그런데 여기서 등장할 녀석은 놈은 'sample'이다. 이 sample이 맛을 보다, 시식을 하다라는 뜻으로 쓰인다.

시식은 음식을 잘게 썰어놓은 자그마한 샘플들을 하나씩 집어먹게 준비하는 거니깐 sample은 시식을 하다라는 용도에 잘 어울리는 간결한 표현이 될 수 있을 것 같다. 그러니깐 sample이란 녀석은 견본, 샘플이라는 명사 외에도 동사로도 쓰이는 것이다.

사전을 보면 sample은 맛을 보다, 시식을 하다라는 뜻으로도 쓰이면서 뭔가 시도해 보다, 시험해 보다는 try, experience, test의 뜻으로도 쓰임을 알 수 있다.

시식코너의 음식은 'sampling', '(free) food sampling'이라고 하면 되고, 시식코너는 the sampling corner(s), the (free) sample stand(booth), the food- trying corner, the tasting corner 등으로 표현된다.
